The police said Geeta suspected her husband had relationships with many women and so they had been staying separately.
They had recently begun to stay together again, with their two kids.
Police Inspector Kiran Kabadi of Tulinj Police Station said, "We got a phone call from JJ Hospital regarding the incident. Shantaram stays at Kajupada and works as a nurse in a private hospital in Nalasopara. Geeta is a housewife. The couple had been fighting regularly over several issues. On Thursday evening when Shantaram came home, he saw his wife was beating up their daughter. He told her to stop and an argument began. In a fit of rage his wife poured boiling oil on Shantaram. He sustained 70% burns and his condition is serious. We are trying to record his statement. The FIR will be registered soon."
