Three tainted Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) cops allegedly involved in a Rs 49 lakh cheating case have been thrown out of the elite squad. The cops have been transferred to the local arms unit, which is considered a punishment posting.

Two senior cops of the Juhu ATS unit seem to be have been shielded, however, with only three constables being punished. On August 5, mid-day had broken the story of five ATS policemen staging an elaborate plan, which included the staged arrest of two accomplices, to cheat UP builder Akhilesh Chauhan of Rs 49 lakh.

The accomplices, who had been absconding, were nabbed within hours of the report being published. Constables Mahesh Dalvi, Santosh Sawaratkar and Mah-esh Bagwe have been transferred from the elite terrorism squad to the Mumbai Police's local arms unit.

"The transfers have been carried out and an inquiry is on against the constables," a senior police officer confirmed. Meanwhile, Police Inspector Shashikant Jagdale and Senior Police Inspector Sangita Patil of the Juhu unit seem to have been shielded by their superiors, as no action has been taken against them.

Patil is the in-charge of the Juhu (Chandan Chowkie) ATS unit, which has been controversy-ridden and had also been shut once due to complaints of extortion. In the past, senior officers have also been transferred if the juniors were involved in misdoings.

Speaking to mid-day, Chauhan said, "I have identified all the cops who had come to the spot. I am risking my life. I need justice in the case and action against all the cops involved in the matter. I am staying in Mumbai and won't leave until this is over."
