In an extreme reaction to being jilted, a 30-year-old man from Ratnagiri stabbed his former lover multiple times, before slitting his own wrists in a suicide attempt.
The pair was discovered bleeding in a room in an Andheri hotel, where they were supposed to meet one last time yesterday. According to the police, the accused, Suraj Surve, and the 27-year-old victim were childhood sweethearts in their hometown, Ratnagiri.
When they were in college, however, the girl's family discovered the affair and forced them to break it off. Last year, the girl got married and moved to Virar to live with her husband. When the husband would go to work, she would get calls from Surve asking to meet her. On Monday, Surve called her again and said he wanted to meet her one last time and that he would never bother her again after that.

They agreed to meet at the Right Choice Inn in Andheri (West). "Both checked in around 11 am but, after 30 minutes, the staffers heard the girl screaming. When they entered the room, they saw that Surve had stabbed the girl in the cheek, abdomen and hand, and had slit both his wrists," said Dhanaji Nalawade, senior police inspector from DN Nagar police station. The police rushed the couple to Cooper Hospital, where both are said to be out of danger.
Sources said things went south after Surve asked the girl to elope with him and she refused. Family members of both the accused and the victim were informed by the police, after which they visited the hospital. "After the incident, Suraj Surve was booked under various sections of the IPC, including attempt to murder and attempt to suicide. He will be arrested after he is discharged from the hospital," said Nalawade.
