The Chennai-based Tamil actress was arrested by the Bandra-Kurla Complex police for harassing a woman on social media who she held responsible for her break-up with her ex-boyfriend

A Chennai-based Tamil actress was arrested yesterday by the Bandra-Kurla Complex police for allegedly harassing a senior executive of an advertising company by first emailing her and later putting up objectionable content about her on social networking websites.

The 25-year-old actress was envious of the complainant, who she thought was still dating her ex-boyfriend and was responsible for their break-up.

The accused had started abusing the Bandra-based complainant in July 2015 through emails.

On not getting any response, she created fake accounts of the complainant on social networking websites like Instagram and Facebook and used abusive language against her there.

She did this over a period of six months till December 2015, when the 37-year-old adwoman filed a complaint with the BKC police.

The accused, who had worked in a Tamil film in 2014, had stayed in Mumbai for some time then and befriended a gym instructor. She later fell in love with him but called it off after sometime. The 30-year-old man later dated the complainant but that didn't last long either. However, the accused thought they were still going around.

The actress sent abusive emails to the adwoman through four different email addresses.

But when the complainant didn't respond, she also marked the Thane Police Commissioner and one of the complainant's friends in her emails, where the actress termed the victim a prostitute and said she had had a relationship with one of the ACPs, a police source said.

After that she took it to another level by abusing the victim on the social network, where she used abusive language, created fake accounts, made her contact number public and uploaded her family photos.

The BKC police called the accused to the city and arrested her the same day she arrived (yesterday).

A case was registered against her under Sections 419 (Punishment for cheating by personation), 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 500 (Punishment for defamation) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code and Sections 66C (Punishment for identity theft) and 67 (Punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act. She was granted bail, said DCP (Cyber crime) M Rajkumar.
