Mumbai: Restaurant delivery man tries to molest customer

The girl who had ordered food was alone at home; she screamed and tried to hit the 40-year-old, but he fled after neighbours rushed out on hearing her


A 21-year-old girl bravely fought off a restaurant delivery man who tried to molest her at her house on August 23. The accused, Kanhaiyalal Kalal (40), ran from the spot and police are looking for him.

Police said on August 23, the girl, who stays at Borivli East, ordered food from Rampal's China Everest Family Restaurant at Shantivan complex, Dahisar. She was alone, as her parents had gone out, when Kalal arrived with the food around 8.30 pm.

PSI Manoj Surwade of Dahisar police station said when the girl was about to go inside to get change to pay him, he called out to her. He entered the house, exposed himself by lowering his trousers and tried to molest her. Police said the girl screamed and tried to attack him.

Some neighbours also rushed out on hearing her. They all tried to chase Kalal, but he managed to escape. The restaurant manager, Narayan Bhataria, said, "Five people work in my restaurant. Kalal had begun to hang around at the restaurant two or three days before the incident, asking for work.

Before that, he used to work at a tea stall and sleep there. As it was Sunday and there was a rush, and I told him to take the order to that place. He didn't come back." The tea stall vendor, Kamlesh Kalal, said that the accused used to work for him one year ago.

Kamlesh said, "Kanhaiyalal Kalal is a resident of the same village as me, Dungarpur, Sagwara, Rajasthan. He would never work for long at one place. He had even worked for the nearby Swati tiffin service for a month." He said Kalal also seemed mentally challenged.

The girl's parents lodged a complaint with Dahisar police station. Senior Inspector Prakash Jadhav said, "Kalal is still at large. We have sent a team to his native place. We are investigating further."
