A teenage girl was allegedly raped by her own father within the four walls of her home last week. The RCF police in Chembur arrested the accused on Saturday, after the child's mother lodged a case against him.

According to the police, the survivor stays with her parents and a younger brother near Vashi Naka, Chembur. She also has two elder sisters who have been married. On November 19, the survivor's mother, who works as a house help, left home for work at 8.15 am.

The child had dropped out of school after Diwali as she showed no inclination to study and was at home with her father and her brother. The father works as a labourer. At about 4.45 pm, child rushed out of her house to a PCO booth nearby and dialled her mother's number.

"Mummy, lavkar ghari ye (Please come home immediately, mother). I have to tell you something," the child told her mother. The woman rushed home and reached there by 6.30 pm, and saw that her daughter was crying in her room and her husband was standing outside.

The daughter confided that, at around 4.30 pm, when her younger brother was playing outside, her father had closed the door to the house and raped her. Overhearing the child describing the sexual assault in horrifying detail, the father ran away. Police said the accused would regularly waste his earnings on alcohol.

The survivor's mother then informed her own mother about the incident, and all of them went to RCF police station. Police registered a case under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). The child was also taken to Sion Hospital for the mandatory medical check-up.

Cops started then searching for the accused and received a tip-off that he was holed up somewhere in Chembur. Senior Police Inspector Dilip Vishnu Raut said, "After receiving information about the whereabouts of her father, we laid a trap and arrested him in the afternoon on November 22 (Saturday)."

API Rajesh Chandugade, investigating officer in the case, said they are expecting the medical report that has not yet been received, and that the accused was produced in holiday court yesterday and remanded to police custody till November 26.
