An employee working in the office of Rural Development Minister Jayant Patil noticed on Sept 9 that the CPU was missing; cops suspect thief was after the data stored in it
In a bizarre incident of theft, an unidentified person successfully managed to walk away with a CPU from the office of Rural Development Minister Jayant Patil inside the Mantralaya. Surprisingly, officials at the Mantralaya have no clue when the computer actually went missing.

According to cops from the Marine Drive police station, the case of the missing computer came to light on September 9 when one of the employees at the office noticed it wasn't there alerted his colleagues. "An FIR was registered for a case of a CPU worth around R8,000 being stolen from the rural development minister's office. Even the complainant has no idea when was the equipment was actually stolen.
On September 9, an official at the Mantralaya realised that the computer was missing and, after discussing it with other staff members and taking permission from the minister, the case was registered on September 11," informed an officer from Marine Drive police station.
CCTVs switched off
According to the police, the CCTV cameras installed inside the office will not be of much help as due to renovation work at the Mantralaya, thet were switched off. "The accused took advantage of the situation as there was some renovation work being done in the office a couple of weeks back and the CCTV cameras were off."
Asked if the staff members have disclosed any names of suspicious persons, the officer said, "We are yet to investigate the matter and will interrogate every person we have a doubt on. As the CPU was stolen, there is a possibility that the accused was after the data in the computer."
Senior Police Inspector Pravin Chinchalkar, from Marine drive police station confirmed the case, saying, "We have not made any arrests but the investigation is ongoing." The unidentified accused has been booked under Section 380 (theft in dwelling house, etc) of the Indian Penal Code.
