A major fire broke out in south Mumbai's Walkeshwar area on Tuesday afternoon.
Local residents claimed that the fire brigade was late in responding and they formed a human chain, passing buckets to carry the water from the Banganga Tank in Malabar Hill to try to douse the fire.
The fire was reported at around 4.34 pm in the afternoon at Subhash Chowk on Narayan Dabholkar Marg. The blaze which was finally brought under control after three hours led to lot of disruption in the area.
Officials from the fire control room confirmed that a one-storey structure near Banganga Tank where a lot of decoration and wedding material was stored caused the fire to spread faster. Several fire engines from Gowalia Tank Fire Station were pushed into service to douse the fire.
Residents alleged that the fire officials who are located barely ten minutes away from the spot took more than half-an-hour to reach the spot. Residents from nearby colonies took matters into their own hand in dousing the blaze by forming a human chain passing buckets to carry the water from the Banganga Tank and were only later joined by the fire officials.
