The Law Students' Council has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court (HC) against the irregularities in admissions.
The Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell has issued a new mandate for candidates, of submitting documents to prove their nationality. The Bar Council of India has also brought in an age-cap for those studying law - upto 30 years for LLB - 3 years course, and upto 20 yrs for the LLB - 5 years course.
Sachin Pawar, President of the Law Students' Council, which has filed the petition against both these new regulations, said, "Students are under a lot of stress. Firstly how can there be an age limit to study anything, especially a subject like law? Right to Education is the fundamental right of all Indians, by putting an age-cap on studying law, this fundamental right is being denied."
Advocate Satish Talekar said, "There have been several judgments before reiterating fundamental right of education to all individuals. Nobody can be prevented from pursuing law education. Moreover, asking for important documents like domicile or passport etc at the last moment is really a troublesome activity for students. It is unfair to students as their admissions are likely to be cancelled if the documents are not presented."
