Nehru Nagar police in Kurla have registered a case of assault against a schoolteacher for caning a Std III student. The eight-year-old girl was allegedly caned during extra lectures for not jotting down points dictated in the class. Police officials said the case was registered on Monday around 10 pm.
Speaking to mid-day Senior Inspector Suresh Bhavar from Nehru Nagar police station said, "The official school timing is till 6 pm, and the extra classes are held for academically weak students from 6 pm to 8 pm. Apparently, eleven students were caned by a teacher.
While her classmates were caned only once on their palms, the girl was caned four times. Marks are clearly visible on her legs." Soon after the girl informed her parents about the beating, they directly went to the police station and registered a complaint against the teacher.
The teacher has been booked under Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code. The investigating officer said, "We have intimated the teacher that a case has been registered against her, but she is yet to report to the police station to give her statement."
Another police official claimed that they had conducted a seminar for the locals in the school on Monday, and had asked them to approach the police whenever required.
