An eight-year-old girl on her way to school on her father's bike lost her life yesterday, after a garbage dumper hit their two-wheeler from behind. The father and daughter duo fell off the bike and, as the culprit tried to escape, the dumper's wheels ran over the girl's head.
A mob gathered at Ghatkopar-Mankhurd road and blocked traffic in protest against the incident
They were rushed to Shatabdi hospital, where the girl, Zoya Shaikh was declared dead on arrival, while her father was later moved to Rajawadi hospital with minor injuries. According to the police, they were crossing the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd road on their bike on their way to Deonar.
Cops tracked down the accused, Eknath Kamble, with the help of the dumper's registration number, which eyewitnesses had noted down
"Zoya was a resident of Baiganwadi in Govandi, and her father was going to drop her at Deonar Mahapalika Muncipal School, when the dumper rammed into their bike and fled. The minor died on the spot when the rear wheels of the dumper went over her head, while her father sustained several injuries," said an officer from Deonar police station.
Passers-by noted the registration number of the dumper (MH-05- AM- 623) and reported it to the cops, who then arrested the driver, Eknath Kamble (35), from Ghatkopar, said API Anil Gaikwad from Deonar police station.
He was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicle Act. After the incident, angry locals gathered in protest and blocked the traffic at Ghatkopar-Mankhurd road.
