A 27-year-old police constable was arrested on Sunday night for ramming his car into a BMW and eventually injuring a pedestrian in Reay Road under the influence of alcohol.

Pawar had a few too many drinks and lost control of the vehicle. He rammed into a BMW (MH12 MR 7863) being driven by a businessman, which was moving in front of his car.
"In order to prevent further damage, he turned the vehicle left injuring a pedestrian. Pawar escaped the scene with the vehicle," said an officer of Byculla police station, adding that the pedestrian identified as Ashok Singh lodged a complaint after which Pawar was arrested.
Singh noted down the number of the car and the police started tracking its location, which was found to be in a colony in Dockyard Road where Pawar stays.
Another officer of Byculla police station said that Pawar was still inebriated when he was brought to the police station from his house.
Police says
"We sent him to a hospital for medical examination and after preliminary reports indicated that he was drunk, we booked him for drunken driving, rash driving, and hit and run under relevant actions of Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicle Act," said Avinash Shingte, senior inspector of Byculla police station, adding that Pawar claimed that he was learning how to drive a car.
Since the offence was bailable, the constable was released on R5,000 bail and was not produced in the court.
A report from the police station was submitted to DCP recommending suspension of Pawar and a departmental enquiry be started against him.
