While there is speculation that someone might have deliberately caused the massive January Deonar fire, one of the 12 CCTV cameras installed at the dump yard for security was stolen and nobody reported the matter to the police. Another camera was installed there by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which claims to have increased security at the ground.

After the fire in January, the CM had directed the BMC to set up 10 CCTV cameras at the Deonar dumping ground, but the civic body decided to add two more and installed 12, instead. It also plans to put 40 night vision cameras that cost Rs 2.5 lakh each.
"Recently, there was a small power failure at the dumping ground. After it was back, we realised that feed from one camera was not coming. The workers went to check and found that one camera was missing," said an official from BMC's solid waste management department.

When asked why a police complaint was not filed, he said in the past, when such an incident had happened under the contractor's tenure, they had a bad experience with the police. The power failure at night may have given the thieves a window to steal it as otherwise, 150 security guards work there in three shifts, he added.
However, deputy chief security officer Chandrakant Jadhav said he doesn't know about any such theft. Other senior officials from both the departments were unavailable for comment.
