The admission process to degree colleges is already over and even the first semester examinations are approaching; students fear not getting admission at all

While the results of the Class 12 supplementary examination declared yesterday have brought joy all over the state, there is doubt clouding over the future of these successful students. Around 7,064 students from the city, along with another 300 from the nearby areas, had appeared for the examinations.

However, the first year admissions to the degree colleges being already over and the first semester examination nearing, the students who have just cleared the supplementary examinations are getting anxious of their future.

Last year, the state government had declared to conduct repeat examinations for unsuccessful students immediately after the HSC results so that one year is not lost and admissions are wrapped up smoothly for all candidates. However, the main objective got lost in this one-month gap between the HSC result and the supplementary examination.

"The students who failed found out in May and had to appear for a repeat exam in July. When these students enter college, it will be exam time already. This gap is going to be very difficult for them to bridge," observed Pawan Agarwal, a teacher.

Though the students who have passed the HSC supplementary examination can now approach the colleges individually, the SSC students appearing for their corresponding examination will have to wait. Since as per court's orders, the admission to Class 11 has to be done online, the matter gets worse. To add salt to the wound, the admission to the all-special rounds are already over.

"We were just given the task to conduct the repeat examinations immediately. Admissions do not fall in our list of responsibilities. The state government will have to make arrangements for it," said Siddheshwar Chandekar, Secretary of the Mumbai Division of the Maharashtra State Board.

When contacted, secretary of school education department said that though the higher education department handles admission, no such thing was communicated.

"However for those who will pass the SSC repeat exam, we will be conducting a special round of class XI centralised online system for them," assured Nand Kumar, Secretary of the school education department.

I made the rounds previously, but was asked to come later. I will make the rounds again, but I fear the backlog now, as it is already the time for semester exams.

Vishal Ingale, resident of Vikhroli

I know most seats are filled but I am not looking for any specific college. However, I don't understand how will I be able to appear for the semester examination.
