Poor road monitoring has once again put the spotlight on the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) after serious wear and tear was found on the new bus lane, which replaced a portion of the Rs 6.48 crore cycle track at BKC.
The dedicated bus lane was opened to BEST buses a few weeks ago. However, while buses have started plying on the lane, the barriers used to divide the lane from the other roads are already in a state of disrepair. According to sources, the damage was caused due to autorickshaws and private vehicles, which have begun using the lane.
Over a month ago, the MMRDA dismantled a portion of the cycle track from the main BKC road to make room for a dedicated bus lane.
MMRDA and BEST had installed fiber pole barriers to divide the dedicated bus lane from the other lanes, which regular motorists use.
On Saturday, when mid-day found that the poles were tilted at a couple of places. One was even found lying on the ground. While a security guard has been posted near the dedicated bus lane to ensure that other vehicles don't ply on the track, bike riders and cyclists were still found on the lane. An MMRDA employee, who did not wish to be named, said, "It is a good thing that we have a dedicated bus lane as this would help office-goers reach work on time. The only thing that needs to be monitored is that the plastic poles, which have been installed, remain intact as private cars and two-wheelers are moving too close to it."
