The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has suspended 228 conservancy workers from the Solid Waste Management department, of which 114 were suspended on Friday alone, for being absent without prior notice.

The suspension was done after Additional Municipal Commissioner Pallavi Darade paid a surprise visit to the Solid Waste Management (SWM) chowkies in different parts of the city on Friday.

According to a statement issued by the Mumbai civic body, Darade visited Babulnath section chowki and D east motor loader chowki on May 7, 2015 where she found 20 conservancy workers absent without prior notice. On May 21, she visited the Bhatia Baug chowki in A ward where 94 workers were found absent for the same reason. She then asked the officials to file a detailed report in the matter.

On May 28, Darade visited section chowki no. 2 in Shivaji nagar (M East ward) and Begumwadi chowki. On checking the muster, she found 114 workers (from 12 chowkies in total) were absent without prior intimation. She suspended them all, bringing the total to 228.

Darade's drive is part of Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta'a directive to do surprise checks of Solid Waste Management chowkies to check absenteeism.
