A 65-year-old woman lost her life after she was run over by a school bus in a hit-and-run incident in Kandivli yesterday morning. The driver was arrested within two hours.
Padmavati Shinge was crossing the road when the bus ran over her around 7.15 am yesterday
According to police officials, Padmavati Shinge (65), a resident of Hanuman Nagar in Kandivli (East), was crossing the road to go to the toilet around 7.15 am yesterday when a speeding school bus (MH-43-H-2861) ran over her.
The accused, Bharat Narayan Jha (45), who drives a bus for St. Lawrence School in Kandivli (East), allegedly drove away without even checking on Shinge's condition or taking her to a hospital. The school bus had more than 10 kids in it at the time of the incident.
While Shinge died on the spot, since the bus had gone over her stomach, locals managed to note down the bus' registration number and informed the police. Her family members, who had gone to Kalyan
for a religious event, were also informed.
Police sub-inspector Gokul Jagtap of Samta Nagar police station said, "The locals helped us nab the accused. After receiving the registration number from them, we arrested the driver from the school premises.
The accused is in police custody and has been charged under sections dealing with hit-and-runs and negligent driving. We are verifying details of his driving licence and past records, if any."
