Adding to the growing number of leopard deaths in the city, a body of a five-month-old cub was found by the patrolling team from Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) near the Shilonda trail on Wednesday evening. The vets who performed autopsy have ruled out the possibility of poisoning or poaching, as all the body parts are intact.

"The body was immediately despatched to the veterinary hospital in the park. A team of experts performed the autopsy on Thursday afternoon," Rajendra Pawar, range forest officer (RFO) said.

Ruling out the possibility of a foul play, SGNP Veterinary Officer Dr Shailesh Pethe said though the final report was yet to arrive, prima facia cause of death appears to be ribcage fracture.

Speaking to mid-day, an SGNP officer said, "It is difficult to ascertain the exact cause of death. But there are chances that the cub might have participated in a hunt with its mother, during which it got kicked by a spotted deer or a wild boar."
