The housing authority has also decided to include in the lucky draw only those homes for which occupation certificates can be provided to winners within a year
The Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority (MHADA) has decided to conduct two lotteries this year, to provide affordable houses to citizens. The first lottery will be held in May while the second is expected to be conducted in December.
The housing authority has decided to provide 3,000 houses in the two lotteries, out of which 1,100 apartments will be a part of the May lottery. According to sources, nearly 1,200 homes will be up for grabs in Borivli in December, along with flats in Virar.
The housing authority is redeveloping a few transit camps in Borivli and nearly 1,200 houses are expected to be made available from this site in December. In a meeting yesterday, officials also decided to set aside Rs 500 crore to buy more land in the state for constructing houses.

The lucky draw will also be conducted for only those flats for which MHADA can provide an occupation certificate (OC) within a year. Which is why, while there are 6,000 homes under construction, only 3,000 will be available this year.
A public relations officer of MHADA said, "The CEO decided that after the lottery process is complete, people who have received homes should not be made to wait for long. Thus only houses that are complete, or are on the verge of completion, will be included in the lottery."
In order to replenish their exhausting land bank, MHADA has also decided to purchase more plots. "We have earmarked R500 crore to buy land so we can construct affordable homes for people," the officer added.
