The girl’s family initially thought someone had thrown a stone that hit her left hand, but doctors later found a pellet lodged in it; the family also found 8-9 pellets scattered around their house later

A young girl was injured after she got shot with an air gun pellet while playing outside her house in Worli on Sunday. While the girl was taken to a hospital and treated, the Worli police have registered a case against an unknown accused.

11-year-old Ashwini Pawar was injured by an air gun pellet on Sunday

The incident occurred at around 10.30 am on Sunday, when 11-year-old Ashwini Pawar was trying to light a fire outside her house for household work. When the child went running inside in pain upon being hit by the pellet, the family thought she had been hit by a stray stone.

Speaking to mid-day, her father, Tukaram, said, "My daughter came into the house with a bleeding hand, claiming someone had thrown a stone at her. So we took her to Poddar Hospital immediately. Doctors there said they needed to operate on her, so we thought a stone had gotten lodged inside her hand."

Ashwini's family found more pellets around their residence, with some even lodged inside the trunk of a tree next to their house

However, after the operation the family learnt that Ashwini had taken a pellet from an air gun, and doctors told them to file a report with the police. After they returned home, the family found 8-9 more pellets scattered around their house, which they handed over to the Worli police.

"The doctors said these pellets are used to kill animals and they can even kill a human being. We are worried because it may happen in future as well. We enquired with our neighbours and other people staying nearby, and found more such pellets. A few were stuck inside a tree next to my house," Tukaram added.

Vijay Kulkarni, senior police inspector, Worli police station, confirmed the incident. A case has been registered against an unidentified person under Section 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.
