Invoking the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act,2012 for the third time in the city, the Oshiwara police arrested a 25-year-old man on Monday night for allegedly raping his five-year-old niece.
The accused, identified as Pramod Tambe, is an unemployed man who stayed with his elder brother, sister-in-law and niece at their home in Jogeshwari (West).
The incident took place on Monday evening when the victim's mother, who works as a domestic help, had stepped out for work. Tambe was at home. As soon as the child's mother left home, he raped her.u00a0When her mother returned home in the evening, the five-year-old told her that she felt a burning sensation in her private parts.
The parents then took the child to a maternity hospital in Jogeshwari for a check-up, where the doctor informed them that their daughter had been subjected to sexual abuse. The parents then approached the Oshiwara police station and registered a complaint.
During enquiries, the police learnt from the victim that she had been violated by her uncle.
"We have arrested Tambe and booked him for rape, as well as Sections 4, 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. We produced him in court on Tuesday, which remanded him to police custody for seven days," said Dilip Rupwate, senior police inspector of Oshiwara police station.u00a0

The Mumbai police had earlier applied the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 in January 18 on Ramesh Rajput, a school bus cleaner who allegedly molested a four year-old girl inside the bus while dropping her home from school. On January 10, the Act was applied on Mohammad Ansari by the Shivaji Nagar police for raping and filming a minor.u00a0
