The latest arrest in the Mira Road call centre scam was one of those who had put in money for the set-up, the Thane police have said. Jagdish Kanani, who was arrested on Sunday, produced in Thane sessions court on Monday and sent to police custody till October 20, had rented out an apartment for the 40-50 employees working in his call centre.
Officers carried out a search at the Borivli resident's home yesterday. During investigation, the police found out that he owned seven shops at Orlim Prestige in Malad.
The Thane police on Monday went to raid two call centres in the western suburbs but they were shut down. "We got details about Kanani from the arrested accused. We found out that he was running two call centres in Malad and Borivli. We raided both but they had been closed for more than two weeks," said a senior officer.
"Kanani was just another cog in the scam machine, Sagar Thakkar alias Shaggy was running the show. We are looking into their association."
The officer said, "We will interrogate him thoroughly in order to find out his exact role. Kanani grew up in Chennai, where his father is a businessman. He worked in a multinational BPO for sometime before shifting to Ahmedabad. He was a trainer in an Ahmedabad call centre, and then set up his own in the western suburbs."
