Barly a few months after an NRI woman was molested in Goregaon (East), the Aarey police have been thrust into another investigation regarding an offence against a non-resident Indian on Wednesday afternoon.
Bag snatchers
This time around, two unidentified motorcycle-borne men snatched a handbag belonging to an NRI woman while she was travelling with two other persons in an auto rickshaw, which had stopped near the Aarey traffic signal at around 2.15 pm.
Meenakshi Joshi (35) told the police she was heading towards Vile Parle and had kept her handbag containing gold jewellery and Rs 2 lakh in cash on top of two other bags behind the seat in the auto rickshaw. The vehicle had stopped near the signal when a duo on a motorcycle approached on the left. Before they realised what was happening, the pillion rider ripped a hole in the rexine hood with his fingernails, snatched her handbag and the duo sped away. The auto rickshaw driver tried to chase the duo, but they managed to escape.
Contradiction
While the police say that Joshi's loss is around Rs 6 lakh, she claims her loss is around a crore. Joshi lives in East Africa and arrived in India on November 11. She was on her way to her sister's home in Vile Parle on Wednesday to hand over her diamond and gold jewellery and Rs 2 lakh cash for safekeeping when the incident occurred.
