The man was trying to catch a moving train when he slipped and fell between the platform and the train; the wheels ran over his arm, crushing it instantly
Days after Monika More (16) fell in the gap between the platform and the train while boarding at Ghatkopar station and lost both her hands, another similar incident occurred yesterday. A middle-aged man, believed to be a rag picker, lost his hand after he slipped into the gap at platform number 1 at Bandra railway station while boarding a northbound suburban local.
The incident took place at 7 pm, after which the injured man was rushed to Bhabha Hospital where he is undergoing treatment. Eyewitnesses said the man was boarding a Borivli-bound train, when tragedy struck. Western Railway sources said that the man was trying to board the train after it began to leave the platform. According to the source, the man was trying to clutch on to the pole with his left hand as the train gathered pace.
"Around 6.52 pm, the man began running behind the slow train while it was in motion. As he lost his balance, he was dragged for a few yards before commuters on the platform raised an alarm, which caught the attention of the guard who immediately stopped the train. However, by then the man had slipped into the gap," said a WR official, on condition of anonymity.
GRP officials then rushed the accident victim to Bhabha Hospital after providing initial medication at the platform. Senior railway officials claim that slow trains during that hour are not that crowded and the frequency of services is also good. The height of platform 1 at Bandra station is between 760-840 mm, which is the required stipulation, said railway officials. "It is a sad incident. We will intensify our drive against such travelling practices," said the WR spokesperson.
