A 38-year-old man died after he fell and hit his head while being chased by the police at Kandivli (East) last night. Around 8pm on Wednesday, Uttam Kainapure, a painter and resident of Damunagar, was drinking with friends inside a parked autorickshaw, when a patrolling constable spotted them. Seeing him, Kainpure, a friend identified only as Salim, and one unidentified person started running. While trying to escape, Kainapure fell and hit his head on the road. The constable and Salim immediately took him to Shatabdi Hospital, but he was declared dead.
Senior Police inspector Dilip Yadav of Samatnagar police said, "The three men started running when they saw the beat marshal and during that time Uttam fell and injured himself. We are investigating the matter and have also recording the statements of eyewitnesses. We are also waiting for the postmortem report. An accidental death report has been registered."
The family, however, has alleged that the police assaulted Kainpure, causing his death. Speaking to mid-day, Kainpure's cousin, Bharat Waghmare, said, "My cousin didn't fall but was assaulted by the cops, which led to his death. A complaint should be registered against the constable and the crime branch should investigate it."
Kainpure's friend, Salim, however, corroborates the police version.
