Andheri resident Iyengar was on his way to Pune on Thursday morning. He had hired a vehicle for the journey with a driver, and was travelling on the back seat of the mid-sized car. According to Iyengar, the driver was going at a speed of around 120 kmph, and as they were approaching the Bhatan tunnel on the highway, at around 11.30 am, he heard a loud explosion.

"I was checking my messages when I heard the noise and was too dazed to even know what was happening around me," recounted Iyengar. As the driver tried to control the vehicle, it hit the road divider, which has a row of trees. The bumper dashed into the gutter running parallel to the divider.

Luckily, Iyengar was wearing a seat belt that saved him from major injuries. "After the death of Gopinath Munde, everyone has started taking precautions, even if they are sitting at the back of the car. The seat belt actually saved my life, and I managed to escape without any injuries," Iyengar told mid-day.

A team of Rapid Action Force (RAF) commandos travelling on the same road spotted the vehicle and took charge of the traffic on the spot. They also took Iyengar, who was in a state of shock after the accident, to Pune. No casualties were reported.
