For advertising Make in India week, the lion installation has been given an ‘in principle’ nod by the heritage body for being placed near a restaurant opposite the promenade and not on it; 7 installations will be placed across Mumbai
Soon, Mumbaikars will spot life-sized statuettes of the mechanised Make in India lion across the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is going to install these lions - the official logo of the Make in India week - at seven prominent locations in the city, such as Marine Drive, Worli Sea Face, etc for 40 days.

However, for the installations at the Marine Drive promenade, the state and BMC have only received an âin principle' nod. Since the Marine Drive promenade is a heritage site, the installation there will require a special permission from the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC).
The principal secretary (industries) had written to the municipal commissioner in the matter. Stating that the logo is proposed to be installed next to the restaurant Pizza by the Bay - which is located opposite the promenade - now, a senior official from MHCC said, "The committee has given its in-principle nod for a temporary period." This is the committee's final decision on the topic.
Letter says
The letter, dated January 7, reads, "Marine Drive is one of the important locations to showcase this event. However, it is learnt that we need permission from the heritage committee⦠Since both these logos are temporary in nature, and will be kept for a period of 40 days only, I would request you to kindly consider the proposal in heritage committee and accord permission..."
The central government is going to have a Make in India week in the city from February 13 to 18. The state government will be promoting its Make in Maharashtra program through it as well.
Since the state government is organizing the event with the help of the BMC, civic officials are in overdrive preparing for the event.
"The central government has designed a âcity takeover plan' for us, and we are the executive body. Under it, the BMC will put up Make in India lions at seven locations and the Make in Maharashtra diya at five or six locations in the city," informed Pallavi Darade, additional municipal commissioner who is in-charge of the program. The central government has sent the designs and specifications to the civic body, which will be manufacturing the logos.
The biggest lion will be 20 feet in length and 9 feet tall, while the others will be a little smaller. The lions will be placed at locations such as Marine drive, CST, Worli Sea Face, etc (see box). for a period of 40 days.
Other proposals
Apart from the lions, the BMC will also be putting up building-wraps on five different locations around BKC. Street art, murals will also be put across the city, apart from around 100 hoardings. However, the entire process will first have to be ratified by the standing committee. A proposal for the same will be put up before the committee soon.
