A major accident involving around 7-8 vehicles on the Mumbai-Pune expressway on Wednesday evening resulted in death of two people and left several others injured.

The accident, which took place at around 5.40 pm near Khopoli on the Mumbai-bound lane, occurred after a speeding truck rammed into the cars coming towards Mumbai from the rear.

The accident led to traffic snarl for around an hour, which was compounded by vehicles using the wrong lane and thus prolonging the traffic department's attempts to clear the logjam.

The accident led to a one-hour traffic snarl on the Mumbai-Pune E-way.

The accident happened one day after another person was killed after two trucks rammed into each other near Khalapur.

Police officials from Khopoli Police Station, under whose jurisdiction the area falls, said that several people sustained injuries and they were rushed to different hospitals. Police officials said that the truck that was responsible for the accident was coming from Solapur and was empty.

Panacea Hospital in Panvel, where three of the injured were admitted, confirmed that one of them, identified as Bharat Kiratkude, was declared dead on arrival due to multiple injuries.

The two others, who are apparently residents of Thane, are said to be in a critical condition.

Dr Surendra Rathod, who was treating the patients, said, "40-year-old Parag Shah sustained a head injury and is on the ventilator since he was having breathing difficulties. The other patient, Rajesh Bolkawde, has also sustained multiple fractures, including on his right upper and lower limbs, probably due to a direct impact from the right side. We have informed the families about the incident and they are on their way."
