MERC conducts hearing on RInfra proposal of hiking power tariff by upto 50 per cent

Power regulator Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), held a public hearing on Monday, for the power consumers of Reliance Infrastructure at World Trade Centre in south Mumbai.

Normally, it's a jam packed session, but this time there were lesser number of people attending the public hearing.

At first, the Reliance Infra - which supplies electricity to 29 lakh consumers mainly in Mumbai's western suburbs, made a presentation on the power tariffs for 2015-16. RInfra wants its residential consumers to be paying anywhere between 12-51 per cent based on the slabs.

At the hearing, the quasi-judicial body heard the power distributor as well as the public and power experts express their views on the tariff hike.

The hearing which started at 11.30am concluded at 2.30pm. The MERC will now come up with the detailed tariff plan after going through various issues presented by the public and RInfra. Once it gets approved, it shall be applicable for the year 2015-16. In the coming weeks, similar public hearing for MSEDCL, Tata Power and BEST, too will be held.
