Kiran Rao, filmmaker and wife of actor Aamir Khan, registered an FIR with the cyber police station at BKC on Saturday after someone created a fake profile of her on social networking site Facebook recently. Rao, in her complaint, alleged that the impersonator would chat with people she knew using the fake profile.

An officer from the police station, requesting anonymity, said that Rao had given an application to lodge the FIR two days ago. On Saturday, the police recorded her statement and an FIR was lodged against an unknown person under sections 419 (cheating by personation) and 66C (identity theft) and 66D (cheating by personation by using computer resource) of the IT Act.
While the police has been tight-lipped about the case, a source said that the accused had sent friend requests to many people in Rao's circle. She learnt about the fake profile created in her name through an acquaintance that the impersonator had got in touch with.
Another officer said that nothing objectionable had been posted by the impersonator yet, but the filmmaker reported the matter to the police immediately in order to prevent any untoward move by the impersonator in future. The police is likely to write to the service provider of Facebook seeking details of the Internet protocol (IP) address, using which the accused person committed the offence.
