There seems to be no escape from the trade for the daughter of a bar girl, who married in hope of finding a better life, and, instead, found herself being harassed by her own husband and mother-in-law, who want her to become a bar girl and pay for their desire to lead a luxurious life.
Fed up of the constant harassment, the woman registered a case with the Oshiwara police. The 25-year-old woman, Neha (names changed to protect privacy) is the daughter of a bar dancer herself, and got married two years ago to Amit Sharma. Neha's mother brought her daughter up in the most difficult of circumstances, and managed to educate her to enable her to stand on her own two feet.
Knowing the social stigma attached to marrying the daughter of a bar girl, the woman somehow managed to find a match for Neha in Amit, and even paid Rs 7 lakh for the wedding in January 2013, the FIR registered with the Oshiwara police has stated. The woman had been introduced to the family through a common friend, and Amit had then claimed he worked with a reputed bank.
Nightmare begins
Neha's hopes for marital bliss soon turned to dust, when she first learnt her husband had lied he didn't work with a bank and, in fact, was unemployed. Then, in their greed to lead a luxurious life, Amit and his mother allegedly began harassing Neha to push her into becoming a bar girl.
"My husband had told us he worked in a bank, but he is jobless. Since we now know he doesn't earn, he wants me to become a bar dancer so that I can earn money to pay for his luxurious life. My mother-in-law has kept a distance between me and my husband, so that she could push me into bar dancing," Neha told mid-day.
The duo would also allegedly physically assault Neha and send her back to her mother's house. Neha would return a few days later in hope that the situation would've taken a turn for the better, but to no avail. She recalled a shocking incident on her birthday, which passed recently. "It was my birthday on March 1 and Amit sent me a message wishing me, and called me to Mira Road.
He wanted to celebrate the occasion in a hotel. When I went there, I saw Amit, my mother-in-law, and other family members. All of them were forcing me to be a bar girl. I was shocked to see this," she alleged, adding that she then decided to go to the Oshiwara police to put an end to the mental torture.
Oshiwara police confirmed they had received the complaint. "We received the complaint against the mother-in-law and husband, and converted it into an FIR under various sections of the Indian Penal Code today (Friday), including dowry harassment. We are still investigating," said a police officer.
