All those who appeared for the career-defining Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE Main) 2016 earlier this month, heaved a sigh of relief after the results were declared last morning. However, the results evoked mixed reactions from those who made the cut and those who could not.

Statistics revealed that 1,98,228 candidates have qualified for JEE (Advanced) 2016. While JEE (Main) determines admission to engineering courses for non-IIT institutions; students wanting to join IITs will have to appear for JEE (Advanced) soon.

Interestingly, three out of four transgender candidates appeared for the test. Unfortunately, none of them qualified for the JEE (Advanced).

"My aim is to secure a seat in IIT-Bombay. Not because it is in Mumbai, where I reside, but I believe that I'll get the best exposure here. Being one of the preferred IITs in the country, I'll face tough competition and this will keep me on my toes. Though I chose physics and chemistry, the latter was a bit hard. I wish to pursue computer engineering. The pressure to compete brings out the best in me. Everyone should try and use the pressure to their advantage. My mother is my biggest inspiration," said Preey. While no toppers or rankers have been declared by the CBSE Board, which conducts the examination, Preey, son of a businessman, is likely to be the state-topper.

"I want to pursue computer science at IIT-Bombay. I want to thank my brother, an IIT-Bombay graduate, for his guidance. I couldn't have managed without him. Besides helping me with the curriculum, he also showed me how to handle the stress. Whenever I felt under pressure, I took to reading to calm down," said Dimple, who could possibly be the state-topper among girls.

The son a sugar factory worker from Jalgaon said, "I have been residing in Mumbai for the last two years, away from home. I did my schooling at Navodaya School in Bhusawal and shifted to Mumbai to appear for the JEE (Main). "Now that I've been shortlisted for JEE (Advanced), I hope to make it count. After clearing Class X exam, I learnt about IIT-ian's PACE (a coaching institute) which offers guidance for JEE (Main) at a discounted rate to candidates who clear its in-house test. So I took the test, cleared it and was welcomed into their fold." Ishwar said he is interested in mechanical engineering. Vijay Chowdhary, Ishwar's father, while commenting on his son's achievement, said, "Ishwar has always been a bright student. He scored 92 per cent in Class X. We are doing our best to support him in whatever way we can. But it is great to know that he is securing scholarships at different levels."

"My father, who has studied only till Class VIII, has a habit of reading newspapers. He once read about free guidance being offered to deserving JEE (Main) aspirants and we immediately left for Mumbai. My parents and people from my hometown are proud of me, as I've been shortlisted for JEE (Advanced). I'll be the first person in the family to study in Mumbai. During our first few days in Mumbai, we spent a few nights at Dadar station because we had no contacts here. I just got two days to prepare for the test, passing which made me eligible for free coaching," said Narayan, who feels academics is his only medium through which he can secure his and the family's future. "I know the hardships my parents are facing to provide us with good education, despite them not even clearing their SSC. A few of my classmates are here and are having fun. Sometimes, even I feel like joining them but I have responsibilities on my shoulders and can't afford to waste a single minute," he added.
