The sinking ship of Mumbai University might have received a temporary lifeline in the form of Dr Devanand Shinde, the vice chancellor of Shivaji University in Kolhapur, who was given additional charge of MU after its Vice Chancellor Sanjay Deshmukh went on an indefinite leave from Wednesday.

On Thursday, Shinde took charge and said he is hopeful of declaring the delayed results soon. Stating that he does not believe in making an announcement about when the result will be declared, Shinde said, "We are here to declare results at the earliest as per the Governor's directives. The entire energy is focused on that right now."

Double duty
Considering that the teachers available for assessment are fewer in number than the papers to be checked, a decision was taken yesterday to allow even those teachers who have taught the subject in the past semester to assess.

Shinde said, "For example, in commerce stream, there is a huge number of students, but there aren't enough teachers to match the ratio. In this case, if a certain professor taught a paper in the earlier semester, s/he would be able to correct papers. This will speed up the process." He also held meetings with lawyers, CAs who double up as professors. "I have requested them to contribute actively."

Online marking
Shinde has a meeting lined up for today with the technical team handling the On-Screen Marking software for MU. "Dr Dhiren Patel has started working with the technical team."
