Eight days after her husband set her on fire, 26-year-old Shobha Gawale passed away early on Saturday morning. Before dying, however, she ensured she would get a stronger shot at justice by making one final statement to the police, telling them how her husband abused her for dowry.

Initially, her husband, Vijay, was charged only for attempt to murder. However, he could now be charged under Section 498A (dowry harassment) of the IPC. This paper had highlighted Shobha's plight on May 23, who was set on fire by her husband for not bearing him a child. Her brothers, Dhyneshwar and Kailash Gaikwad, demanded that the police record her full statement so she could tell them about the domestic violence she suffered in the 7 years of her marriage.
"Why should he be charged only for attempt to murder? He has been abusing my sister for years. We want him to be punished for all the torture," said Dhyneshwar.

API Arun Kshir Sagar from Narpoli police station said, "The second statement was recorded on Friday. We will take necessary steps against the accused after taking statements from the family members."
Shobha's body was taken to Nanded for the final rites on Saturday.
