The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Mumbai Customs seized over three kilos of gold worth around Rs 75 lakh at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai, on Friday.
The authorities swung into action based on information that some passengers on international flight AI-966 on the Jeddah-Hyderabad route would be handing over gold to domestic passengers at Mumbai.
In the first case, Ashraf Ali was caught with three cut pieces weighing 491 grams valued at Rs 12,20,221.
In the second case, Najakat Ali was caught with 9 pieces along with one 5 gram and one 30 gram gold pieces weighing around 302 grams valued at Rs 7,50,523.
The third case was made against Nasir Ali who had 9 pieces weighing 1139 grams valued Rs 28,30,614.
In the fourth case, Mohammed Muhajid had 4 pieces and one biscuit weighing 10 gram and two biscuits weighing one gram each weighing around 754 grams valued at Rs 18,73,822.
In the fifth case, Rizwan Ahmad had 2 pieces weighing 359 grams valued at Rs 8,92,178.
The gold had been concealed in their underwear and inner pant pockets.
The total weight of gold recovered from these five pax is 3046 grams valued at Rs 75,67,358.
