Several bar owners and patrons in Thane were almost yanked out of their inebriated state when a tall policeman in a crisp khakhi uniform entered the bar along with three constables. Assuming it to be a raid, many started fleeing the spot, until they were stopped by the cop, who turned out to be the Joint Commissioner of police, VV Lakshminarayana. Only, he was not there to rough up miscreants, but to motivate them to follow a better lifestyle. Lakshminarayana is famous in Thane as an honest cop and thorough gentleman.

A follower of Swami Vivekananda, he has been telling the youth to follow the lifestyle of great leaders like Vivekananda in his lectures at seminars to cops in his department. On the night of December 31, Lakshminarayana visited most of the area's bars - Sea Queen in Louis Wadi, Red Bull at Pokhran Road and Sur Sangeet bar in Upavan. "When the youngsters, who were partying and had a glass in there hand saw Lakshminarayana, they started running. But he stopped them and started talking to them. He urged them to stay away from bad habits, and instead spend quality time with their parents on New Year's Eve," said an onlooker.
Lakshminarayana, who was recently promoted to the post of Additional Director General of Police, has investigated several high-profile cases like illegal mining OMC Scandal, Emaar Properties scam, Satyam scandal and disproportionate assets case against Karnataka's YS Jaganmohan Reddy. "Lakshminarayana did not spare the bar owners either. He requested them to start some good business, like a bookshop instead of selling alcohol," added the onlooker.
He visited most bars for a thorough check. "I was on the night round and checking the bars. I thought I'd have a word with the youth," said Lakshminarayana.
