A fire broke out on the first floor of a residential building in Mazgaon Wednesday evening

Mumbai: A fire broke out on the first floor of a residential building in Mazgaon Wednesday evening.

According to fire officials, six people from the same family got injured in the incident as they got panicked and jumped from the first floor window. All injured were admitted to the J J Hospital and are now stable.

At around 5.30 pm yesterday, fire started erupting from the common passage of the first floor of Taadwadi BIT chawl. A havan was going on at the first floor for Navratri festival. Main cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained but according to fire brigade officials, prime fascia fire could have started from the havan due to which a minor cylinder blast happened. The fire started spreading through the ceiling electrical wires of the seven rooms on the same floor and gutted some furniture and wiring.

Because of the heat and intense smoke six people from the same family got panicked and jumped from the window of their house. The injured are identified as Rajshri Savadkar (33), Pooja Savadkar (21), Nanda Savadakar (45), Ankit Savadkar (18), Sanjay Ghamte (34) and Mahadev Savadkar (55). Luckily there were no major injuries and only Mahadev fractured his leg.

Additional Divisional Fire Officer S D Sawant said, "We are investigating the exact cause of fire. Report will come out in next three days. Primarily, it looks like fire started from the havan kund that was kept opposite to Savadkar family's house in the passage and slowly it got spread to the neighbour's house as well."

According to another fire officer, "Savadkar family had recently renovated their house and organised a pooja for the same. After the pooja they kept the havan kund in the passage and because of which a cylinder caught fire and blast took place which lead to the fire in electrical wires."
