According to the police, the accused, identified as Ravindra Kasi Mutha (47), was arrested while he was trying to sell the diamond to a jeweller at Zaveri bazaar.
Police inspector Rajkumar Kothmire from Lokmanya Tilak Marg police station said: "Mutha was trying to sell a diamond worth Rs 45 lakhs for a mere Rs 25 lakhs. This made the jeweller suspicious and he informed us."
On the basis of this information, two constables were dispatched and the accused was brought to the police station on Wednesday.
"While we were still interrogating him, we got another piece of information that a certain individual has duped a diamond merchant in Hyderabad and fled to Mumbai to sell the rock here in Zaveri Bazaar. We then sent a picture of the accused to Panjagutta police who confirmed that this was the same man they were looking for. We then handed him over to them," added Kothmire.
According to the cops, Mutha had gone from Bengaluru to Hyderabad with some of his friends. There they hatched the plan and duped the diamond merchant.
"In Hyderabad, Mutha and his friends met the merchant and took a diamond from him on the pretext of consulting someone before purchasing such an expensive piece. The merchant had send one of his employees with them but they stationed him outside their so-called office and fled with the diamond through the back door," said Kothmire.
The accused has been handed over to the Bengaluru police and booked under section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.
