Cops say that thefts are on the increase because careless owners get security to park their cars NEXT time you hand the keys of your car to the watchman for parking it, remember to collect the keys immediately. According to police records, more than 207 cases of motor vehicle theft have been registered across the city till July this year. And strangely, most car thefts involve the role of the watchman.
Last week, a Honda CRV was stolen from the posh Vrindavan apartments in Bandra, all because of carelessness.
The owner Sufian Kapadia handed over the car keys to the watchman Pintu Saha (36) to park the car and left the keys with him. But in the morning, another watchman woke Kapadia up with the news that his car was missing. "The previous night watchman Saha handed over the keys to an unknown person who posed as my relative. Saha told me that he was sleepy when he handed it over," said Kapadia.
According to Prakash George, senior inspector, Bandra police station, "Most car owners are careless. They don't even know the whereabouts of the watchmen guarding their vehicles and homes." Police stations have made the registration of watchmen mandatory.
Even Bandra's adjacent suburb Khar is affected, according to Nitin Patil, sub inspector, Khar police station. "They should ensure proper security measures like putting gear lock, clutch lock and GPS systems (global positioning system) in their cars to act as safeguards," he said.
Ashok Rang, secretary of Hill and Sea apartment at Pali Hill, said, "We have given watchmen whistles to alert the people in case of any car robbery."
