Dombivali has beaten CST, Thane and Kalyan railway station to become the most crowded and fare generating suburban station in the Mumbai division on Central Railway (CR), an RTI query has revealed

This could be one of the reasons behind the growing rail accidents beyond Thane. Dombivali has beaten CST, Thane and Kalyan railway station to become the most crowded and fare generating suburban station in the Mumbai division on Central Railway (CR), an RTI query has revealed

The reply to a query filed by activist Anil Galgali stated that Dombivali is the most crowded station on the Central Railway (CR) with 2,33,635 commuters using the station everyday and Rs 14,94,538 being collected via fares from there everyday.

Everyday 38.56 lakh people travel on CR and generate Rs 2.19 crore with Dombivali, Thane, Kalyan, Ghatkopar and Kurla being the top 5 most crowded stations.

Thane is second with 2,25,490 passengers travelling through the station everyday and Rs 13,84,020 being generated as fares.

Figures on suburban daily average in terms of ticket selling, numbers of passengers and fare receivables of all 85 suburban stations of Mumbai division on CR also say that Thane remains at the top position in terms of ticket selling (60,895) on daily basis, while Kurla station is at second spot with 55,552 tickets being sold daily on an average.

This was followed by Ghatkopar (42,977) primarily due to the commencement of Metro Rail from this station.

"In all the 85 stations under the various routes of CST to Kasara, Khopoli, Panvel and Andheri, apart from Thane-Vashi-Navi Mumbai, the total income generated is Rs 2.19 crore. Thane comes in at second with 2,25,490 commuters followed by Kalyan with 1,80,676, Ghatkopar at 1,74,926 and finally Kurla 1,50,708," said Anil Galgali.

A total of Rs 2.19 crore is generated in terms of income on the CR where again Dombivali tops with Rs 14.94 lakh, Thane at Rs 13.84 lakh, Kalyan at Rs 12.55 lakh, Ghatkopar at Rs 9.32 lakh and finally CST at Rs 8.97 lakh. Everyday total of 121 rakes operate on CR that runs 1618 train services are completed.

Kalamboli, a station on Diva-Panvel route witnesses the lowest number of passengers with only 55 tickets sold daily. Only Rs 887 is collected as fare from here. Reacting to the findings, Galgali said that number of train trips are very less in comparison to commuters travelling everyday which is primarily owing to the "lackadaisical" approach of the officers.
