Disabled Mumbai youth burgled houses to fund surgery

Uday Patil lost both his legs in a train accident, robbed houses and shops to collect money for life-saving operation


A 24-year-old habitual housebreaker was caught red-handed in Charkop, Kandivli. Surprisingly, the accused, Uday Nilesh Patil is physically disabled, with both legs fitted with iron rods and he requires a renal operation to survive.

Nitin Gije, police sub-inspector at Kandivli station said, "We received a tip-off that Patil was planning to a rob a house in Charkop on Wednesday. We caught him red-handed while he was trying to break-in." Sources from Kandivli police revealed that Patil had met with a train accident three years back.

His renal system was also affected in the accident and he had to undergo an operation. While parts of his system were replaced, doctors had told him that he would not be able to survive for long if he does not undergo another operation.

During interrogation, the Charkop resident revealed that after the diagnosis, he decided to start breaking into shops and houses so that he could have easy access to money and collect money for his operation. Patil can walk with the fitted iron rods and he would always carry his equipment to help him commit burglary.

The accused has been on police records with more than 15 cases against him. Cops recovered laptops and other valuables that he had stolen from various houses in Charkop, Andheri, Malad and Amravati city.
