Eight days ago, when Kantabai was busy with work, a snake bit her. Kantabai was taken to hospital but because of inadequate medical facilities there, Kantabai succumbed to the bite. Tukaram immediately slipped into depression. "He was finding it very hard to come to terms with her death and had stopped eating properly," said a police officer. On the morning of January 26, Tukaram, who was at home at the time, consumed poison.

The owner of the brick furnace, who had come for a condolence visit to Tukaram's house, found him unconscious. He was immediately taken to Central Hospital, Ulhasnagar, but died on January 27. "Tukaram was being treated at the hospital but his all vital organs had failed," said a police officer. "He was very attached to his wife and after she died he had lost the will to live; he had consumed a pesticide on Friday," the officer said.
