As per data available with the Cyber Crime Cell (see box), Facebook topped the list of platforms used to commit cyber scams and crimes in 2014. The stats also revealed that cases of credit/debit card fraud have nearly doubled every year since 2012.

Officials claimed that access to private information via hoax calls and e-mails was the primary reason behind the sudden rise in the number of cyber crime cases across Navi Mumbai.

Speaking to mid-day, Navi Mumbai Cyber Crime Cell in-charge, Inspector Pratibha Shendge said, "Criminals make hoax calls pretending to be loan agents and ask for bank details. Citizens who fail to verify such calls fall prey to cyber criminals."

She added that a majority of the cyber crimes related to Facebook involved victims being blackmailed through fake accounts and morphed pictures. "Usually, in such cases, victims fall prey to their acquaintances. By tracking down the IP address, the department has solved over 70 per cent cases till date," Shendge said.
