A police car rammed into pedestrians near Nariman Point, killing one and injuring two others, including a 10-year-old boy, on Saturday night. The accused, a constable attached with the crime branch, was arrested, but was granted bail when he was produced in the local court yesterday.

The officer is identified as Mangesh Chavan, a resident of police quarters in Naigaon, and working in Mumbai Police's Crime Branch Unit 1. According to officials from Marine Drive police station, constable Chavan was on night duty on Saturday. He was driving the police vehicle with API Tukaram Deolekar, who was sitting next to him.

While passing Inox Theatre towards Nariman Point around 11 pm, Chavan lost control of the vehicle and crashed into three pedestrians, who were walking on the side of the road. The victims have been identified as Mohammad Shahgir Mohammad Gafoor Ansari, his father-in-law Sajid Jamaluddin Sayyed, and a 10-year-old kid Sunil Hiralal Jaiswal, who was out with his parents. The car did not stop there, and rammed into a tree opposite Jolly Maker's building. Locals caught Chavan and handed him over to the police.

The three victims were rushed to St George hospital, where Ansari was declared dead on arrival. The other two are currently recuperating in the ICU and their condition has been declared critical. Ansari and Sayyed have been running a plastic toy business at Nariman Point for the last 35 years.

ACP Rajendra Chauhan, from Marine Drive police station, said, "A case has been registered against Chavan under Sections 279 (rash negligence driving), 304A (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of Indian Penal Code. He was produced in court on Sunday and granted bail. The injured are in critical condition and recuperating in the hospital. We are investigating the matter."
