The boy's father is attached to the Local Arms unit of Tardeo police station. The two had returned from a trip to Sawantwadi late on Sunday. "The father had borrowed a jeep from his friend for the trip to his native place," said Manohar Hindalkar, police inspector of Tardeo police station.

While the constable went back to work yesterday, his son went to the police quarters around 11.30 am to remove his belongings from the jeep, which was parked there. "The 15-year-old started the jeep, but as it was in gear it bounced, and moved in the direction of some vegetable vendors who were selling their fare. Three women and a vendor were injured," said an officer from Tardeo police station.

The injured victims have been identified as Sunita Kokare, Neeta Surti, Dulari Bai Pardeshi and Mukesh Chaudhari. Kokare, Surti and Pardeshi are housewives and had come to purchase vegetables to the Tardeo police colony. Chaudhari is a vegetable vendor.

After a long delay and at the insistence of the victims, the Tardeo police finally registered an FIR against the 15-year-old last evening and arrested him under Section 337 of the IPC (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and other sections of the Motor Vehicles Act for driving without a licence. The boy is a student of Std X. All the four victims sustained minor injuries, as they were pushed to the ground by the jeep. They were taken to Nair hospital and later discharged.

"Surti and Kokare had swelling on their knees, while Chaudhari had injuries on his hands," said Mukesh Chavan, the son of another constable who lives in the colony.u00a0
