A Congress party worker and two of her accomplices have been arrested by Borivili police for conning students with the promise of getting them admission in their desired colleges and then demanding money for the service.
According to officials from Borivli police station, Kumud Patil and her partners in crime Santosh Rane and Sanjay Prajapati have cheated several youngsters with false assurances. Patil had contested and lost the municipal polls in 2012. The trio also used Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam's letterhead for duping the victims.
Kundeshwar Parab, a student, was approached by Patil who promised him enrolment in a Kandivli-based college if he coughed up a âdonation' of Rs 5 lakh. Parab gave her Rs 3.5 lakh in 2011.
However, Parab never got the admission he was promised and when he asked for his money back, the accused gave him several cheques that bounced. Finally, Parab approached Borivli police to register a complaint.
An officer revealed that following this Rane and Prajapati were arrested, but Patil secured anticipatory bail from court. However, her bail application was rejected later and she was arrested.
The Congress worker cheated the most number of students in 2012 -- around the time she was preparing to contest the election -- taking advantage of her political position. u00a0
