Regarding the future of the case, Ramesh Mahale, one of the investigating officers, said Rajan could be tried along with 10 other accused, since the trial has just started. Mahale said, "The trial has just started and around five witnesses have deposed in the court. A few of them are panch witnesses and the rest are police officers who registered the offence."

He added, "The main witnesses are yet to be examined by the court and hence, Rajan's trial could commence with them. But that can only happen after the police receives his custody in the case and a chargesheet is filed." Raja Thakare, special public prosecutor in the murder case said, "Rajan's trial with the other accused depends on when the police receives his custody."

The next hearing in the case is on November 17. Dey, who was Editor (Investigations) of mid-day, was shot dead in Powai on June 11, 2011, when he was on his way home on his motorcycle.
