Ghanshyam Rangnekar (75) cannot move or speak and is barely conscious. He lies in ward 12 of the government-run Rajawadi hospital, Ghatkopar, since Friday.

There is nobody by his bedside and his hospital bills are unpaid. He had a cerebral stroke and was admitted to hospital by the police after a stranger called the senior citizen's helpline.

Yet, his neighbours say, Rangnekar can easily afford treatment at any private hospital as the man is, in fact, a billionaire

For the last few days, Dr Vijay Sangole, who has been known to Rangnekar, for years now and the Nehru Nagar police are searching for his relatives and the maid to access money for his treatment.

HELPLESS: Ghanshyam Rangnekar can't pay his hospital bills, as he is barely conscious and there is no access to funds.

"To access the money, the bank has told us we need to give them the account number.

I don't have his account number, which the bank refuses to let us know," said V N Desai, police sub inspector with Nehru Nagar police station.

According to Dr Sangole, Rangnekar stays in a 700 sq ft apartment in Shell colony, Chembur, which costs nearly Rs 70 lakh.

He also owns a duplex flat in New Natraj Apartment in Pestom Sagar, Chembur, which costs over Rs 1 crore.

Two-three years ago, he sold another duplex flat at nearly Rs 70 lakh. "A man of this age can live his last days with dignity," said Sangole, who wants to move Rangnekar into a private hospital and appoint a nurse for him.

Rangnekar is unmarried and used to stay with his two elder sisters at Shell colony. Both the unmarried sisters passed away few years ago. In fact, one sister died in the 26/7 floods.
