Sawant's funeral took place at the Bandra crematorium. Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and leaders from various parties were present. According to Sena leaders, Sawant developed complications after getting discharged from a city hospital two days ago. He breathed his last in the early hours of Friday.
Thackeray and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid tributes to Sawant. Both said the city had lost a die-hard Sainik. "Sawant helped me a lot in the Assembly. He worked hard for the common people as a legislator and corporator," Fadnavis said in a condolence message.
