Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued evacuation notice to the Siddharth Vihar hostel at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar College located in Wadala.

As the building is not evacuated as yet, the BMC has decided to approach the metropolitan court for taking further action of disconnecting the electricity and water supply to the building so that it would be vacated soon to avoid any untoward incident.

The hostel, which was used by famous poet and founder of Dalit Panther, a political party, Namdeo Dhasal also Ramdas Athavale and many other Republican Party leaders, is in a dilapidated condition. The building's ground plus three structure was constructed in 1964 and is in a dangerous condition since 2011.

After issuing notice to the hostel, the management approached the court and the evacuation action has been stopped. "The case is pending with Shindewadi court and the judgment is expected to come out in the next 15 days," said sources from the People's Education Society management.

On Monday, the municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte took a visit to about 20 dilapidated structures in the island city including Siddharth hostel in Wadala.

"The management approached the court in 2011 but now we will again approach to vacate the building as it is in a dangerous condition. The management has to decide on some alternate accommodation for the students," said Kunte.

Kunte visited the building with two other additional municipal commissioners Mohan Adtani and SVR Shrinivas along with deputy commissioner Sudhir Naik, Milin Sawant, Director Laxman Vhatkar and city engineer Prakash Kadam.

Kunte said that the structural audit of the dilapidated buildings will be done soon and the report will be compiled in two days. He has planned a visit to the dilapidated buildings of Western suburb on Tuesday.
